Symbian to be open sourced and offered royalty free

The mobile handset market has been changing very rapidly as of late with the Apple iPhone being launched, the Google Android platform, LiMo and now the opening up of the Symbian OS (and related technologies).

Nokia plans to buy out the remaining Symbian consortium members in order to facilitate the creation of the Symbian Foundation. From the Symbian Foundation website:

[I]ndustry leaders are coming together to establish Symbian Foundation, to bring to life a shared vision and to create the most proven, open and complete mobile software platform - available for free. To achieve this, the foundation will unify Symbian, S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) software to create an unparalleled open software platform for converged mobile devices, enabling the whole mobile ecosystem to accelerate innovation.

This unification should help reduce some of the current fragmentation in the mobile market. This will also help developers by reducing the amount of platforms that they need to consider when creating mobile applications.
